• Commissioner’s Monthly Dialogue with Superintendents – Wednesday, April 18

The next audio conference call with Commissioner Cassellius is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, 9:30-10:30. Kristen Ehresmann, director of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control Division (IDEPC), at the Minnesota Department of Health, will be present to talk about proposed rulemaking changes.

As a reminder, the conference call schedule through June 2012 is as follows:

- Wednesday, April 18, 9:30-10:30
- Wednesday, May 16, 9:30-10:30
- Wednesday, June 20, 9:30-10:30

The Commissioner encourages you to make time on your schedule to participate in these informative conference calls. She is happy to answer questions and hear your comments and concerns. Call-in instructions will be sent to you next week prior to Wednesday’s conference call.

• Conversations with Commissioner Cassellius: An Event for Minnesota Principals – Thursday, May 3

Minnesota principals are invited to attend a special dinner event uniquely tailored for them to engage in dynamic conversations with Commissioner Cassellius focusing on the education of English Learners. The event will be held in conjunction with the annual Minnesota ESL, Bilingual & Migrant Education Conference on May 3, 2012. Principals are also invited to attend the Thursday conference (at no additional cost) to receive updates around the new ESEA Waiver, WIDA Standards and Assessments, and Response-to-Interventions for ELs, Culturally Responsive Parent Engagement and others. Principals will receive CEUs. The registration and the link to the flyer is on the www.mnellconference.org website. The registration deadline is April 27.

• Announcing Round 2: Grant Opportunity Federal – Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) Pilot Project

Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment funds, CFDA 84.384A, entitled “Statewide Longitudinal Data System Recovery Grant”, were awarded to the Minnesota Department of Education for the purpose of supporting participation in the interoperability testing of the schools interoperability framework SIF protocol.

Approximately $750,000 is set aside for this grant initiative to award multiple projects with maximum grant awards up to $45,000. Regional Management Information Centers, Education Districts, ECSUs and school districts or charter schools banding together and applying on behalf of one, two or three districts or charter schools must have authorization from the school/s represented. The proposed award period is July, 2012, through June 30, 2013. Several steps are involved in preparing for submission of the application, so please begin early.
