The Government Relations Division of the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) manages and oversees MDE’s interactions with the State Legislature and helps ensure its compliance with state law. This division helps create rules that guide the agency in performing its duties, oversees production and submission of required reports to the Legislature, and creates summaries of laws affecting schools, libraries and other areas related to education.

In addition, the Government Relations Division analyzes education budgets, legislation and policy and coordinates budget, legislative and federal-state planning.

Legislative Summaries

Summaries are prepared by the Minnesota Department of Education of the state session laws passed each year. Each year’s synopsis include a detailed review of the “education omnibus act” as well as a more abbreviated summary of other education-related laws passed during the year.
