Minnesota Students Shine in International Assessments
A report released by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) shows Minnesota students posting high scores in both math and science, outperforming peers both nationally and internationally. The report looks at the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), comparing the performance of U.S. fourth- and eighth-grade students in math and science against their international counterparts. Of the U.S. states and international education systems that participated, Minnesota eighth-grade students scored sixth highest in science and seventh highest in math. Commissioner’s Dialogue with Superintendents – December 19 Conference Call
School district superintendents are invited to participate in the monthly dialogue via audio conference call with Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. The next conference call is scheduled for Wednesday, December 19, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Call-in instructions will be e-mailed to you two-three days prior to the conference call.
Facilities Age and Square Footage Report
Read the memorandum from Tom Melcher regarding the Facilities Age and Square Footage Report. School districts are required to annually review their district’s inventory of buildings and the vital information pertaining to each building. Response is required by December 29, 2012. Charter schools and cooperatives are NOT required to complete this report.

Paraprofessional Recognition Week – January 13, 2013
Paraprofessional Recognition Week, scheduled for January 13, 2013, recognizes the valuable contributions of paraprofessionals in Minnesota’s public schools. As part of the celebration of this event, the Minnesota Department of Education is sharing strategies that schools may use to honor and recognize paraprofessionals. A proclamation from the governor and a certificate will be sent through the Superintendents’ Mailing in early January. Read more ways to celebrate this week.
