ROSEVILLE – Today, Acting Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Mike Boots and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 2014 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees. Forty-eight schools and nine districts across the nation were honored, including Five Hawks Elementary School in Prior Lake, Chisago Lakes Middle School in Lindstrom and the Waconia Independent School District. Winners are recognized for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways.
Following the announcement, Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius released this statement:
“I could not think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day than to congratulate Five Hawks Elementary School in Prior Lake, Chisago Lakes Middle School in Lindstrom and the entire Waconia school district for being recognized as 2014 Green Ribbon Schools. These schools are teaching our youth the importance of preserving the earth’s precious resources, maintaining healthy ecosystems, enhancing health and wellness and saving energy costs. As Minnesotans, we take pride in the forests, lakes, prairies and farmlands that make our state extraordinary and our quality of life so rich. These students are learning important, lifelong skills that will help maintain the beautiful Minnesota we all know and love.”
