As Director of Communications, Josh Collins oversees internal and external communications for the Minnesota Department of Education. He is the primary liaison between the department and members of the press, and responsible for telling the story of how efforts of the department benefit young Minnesotans and their families.
Prior to joining the department, Josh worked for the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority where he served as the Public Communications Manager and Public Art Administrator for the Union Depot restoration project. Josh returned to Minnesota in 2011 after spending five years in Portland, Ore., where he managed communications for TriMet, the transit agency with the seventh largest ridership, per capita, in the nation. Josh also has deep connections to both education and state government, having served as the Assistant Director of Communications for Minneapolis Public Schools, as chair of the Marketing Committee for the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation and at MnDOT where he led communications efforts around the construction of the Hiawatha Light Rail Line.
Josh earned a B.A. in Psychology from Macalester College and a master’s degree in Strategic Communications from the University of Oregon. He lives in New Brighton with his wife and three children, who all proudly attend public school.
