Through the Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (DoD Fresh), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is able to offer sponsors a wider variety of fresh produce than would normally be available through “Regular” USDA purchases. USDA has met with DoD, and expressed its desire that local procurement efforts should be further increased. With that, DoD is procuring locally to the greatest extent possible, consistent with season and quality. DoD Fresh is an easy way to ensure sponsors get the freshest fruits and vegetables available by delivering directly to sponsors in a timely manner.

Twice per year sponsors are able to allocate a portion of their entitlement towards DoD Fresh on a Preference “Commodity” Survey. The Food Distribution Program will coordinate with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to load the approved entitlement into the Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Order Receipt System (FFAVORS). Sponsors place weekly orders in FFAVORS and produce is delivered from the program’s contracted vendor (currently Bergin Fruit and Nut Company).

All shipping and handling fees are factored into the price listed in the catalog, no hidden costs. This is the only distribution model in which sponsors participate to utilize entitlement towards fresh fruits and vegetables
