Student Discipline
Student Discipline addresses current federal and state law and provides legal resources and technical assistance related to the discipline of students in public schools.
The Expulsion/Exclusion section contains legal resources for parents who are seeking representation at an expulsion/exclusion hearing, annual expulsion summary reports, and redacted Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) expulsion appeal decisions.
The Pupil Fair Dismissal Act (PFDA) section contains federal and state laws and resources related to the PFDA. This section also contains a copy of the PFDA, which sets out the procedures for districts to follow when suspending or expelling/excluding a student from school.
The Student Discipline Law section contains a summary of technical assistance documents issued by MDE to address disciplinary related questions.
The Disciplinary Incident Reporting System (DIRS) is available online. This reporting system includes the reporting for all students of out-of-school suspensions of one day or more, expulsions/exclusions and dangerous weapon incidents. It also includes in school suspensions, removals of less than one day, and interim alternative educational placements for special education students.
