Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)-Concurrent Enrollment

Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows students in their junior or senior year to earn college credit while in high school.

Who Can Participate? PSEO is open to junior and senior high school students. Each college and/or university that offers PSEO sets their own requirements for enrollment into the program. Students may take PSEO courses on a full or part-time basis. For full-time PSEO students who begin in their junior year, it is possible to graduate from high school with enough college credits for an Associate’s Degree.

Read one student's recent experience:

“The idea of taking college classes on a college campus really appealed to me. I decided to take advantage of Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) on a full-time basis, beginning in my junior year. I will graduate from college with a Bachelor of Science in Health Education two years after graduating from high school. PSEO gave me a great head start!” —Amanda M.

Interested students should speak with their high school counselor to see how PSEO is offered in their area. Students can earn both high school and college or university credit upon successful completion of the course or courses. When people hear "PSEO," they tend to think of high school students taking a course taught by a college instructor on a college or university campus. However, there are at least three other ways you can participate. These options are referred to as concurrent enrollment.

Concurrent enrollment can include:
• Courses at your high school taught by a qualified high school instructor (see concurrent enrollment below);
• Courses at your high school taught by a college instructor; or,
• Courses offered online or via ITV at your high school taught by a college instructor.

Concurrent Enrollment courses are taught during the regular school day and are offered through a partnership between your high school and a college or university. Qualified high school instructors or college faculty teach the courses. The same assessment methods and content are used, as the equivalent sections taught on the college campus. Students can earn high school and college credit upon successful completion of the course or courses.

Concurrent enrollment goes by a variety of names, such as “College-in-the-Schools” at the University of Minnesota and Fond du Lac Community College, “Senior-to-Sophomore” at St. Cloud State University and “Challenge Program” at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Students pursuing postsecondary options will be able to save time and money by entering college with earned credit toward graduation. Contact your high school counselor or the college or university of your choice for specific program requirements.
